HOW ONE CAN LEGALLY CHANGE NAME ON HER OR HIS NATIONAL IDENTITY CARD IN UGANDA

• The Uganda citizenship and immigration control Act cap
• The Registration of Documents Act (Cap 81)
• Registration of persons Act 2015

Any person desirous of changing his or her names can do so.

Change of name is different from verification of name.

Change of name is a process of denouncing ones name and adopts another ie, removing some name, adding some name or completely adopting totally a different name.

Assuming my current name is OKUMU MARTIN ENA I can change to OKUMU MARTIN ENA SOG(here I have  changed my name by way of adding SOG) or OKUMU MARTIN SOG(here I have changed by removing ENA or ODIKI KASTA(here I have changed my name by adopting completely different name)

Verification of name is a process of stating that names on given documents are for one and the same person .ie  if Iam Okumu martin SOG, some of my documents bear Okumu Martin and others okumu Martin Sog. In this case if you only need to swear A statutory declaration that you are one and the same person however some authorities insist on affidavit instead of statutory declaration.

Whereas the contents in the affidavit and statutory declaration are the same, affidavits are intended to be used in courts of law while statutory declaration is meant to be used in administrative entities/offices

1.  Find a lawyer to prepare/draft for you a deed poll stating the changes you are making.(in case you do not have one  click on this link for assistance https://onlinelegaldocumentdraftingeastafrica.wordpress.com/2022/03/27/deed-poll/

1. Sign the deed poll and have it commissioned by commissioner of OATHS
2. Take copies of deed poll for assessment of registration fee either at Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) or DAIMOND TRUST BANK.
3. Proceed and pay the registration fee as directed.
4. File both the copies of deed poll and payment receipt to registrar of documents/births and death at URSB, you should be advised When to pick your copies.
5. Deed poll shall be given file number and forwarded to the registrar.
6. Deed poll shall be reviewed and registered by registrar.
7. Cross check with the registrar’s office to pick your registered deed poll on the date you were told check.
8. Have a copy of deed poll published in either Uganda gazette at afee.
9. Obtain passport application form and have them completed accordingly.
10. Obtain recommendations from A lawyer.
11. Take the passport application forms for assessment at any of The URA agent bank.
12. After assessment proceed to pay the application fee.
13. Attach a copy of the registered deed poll, a copy of the Uganda gazette containing your deed poll, national id if any, a copy of the passport you intend to change, payment receipts, and two passport photos on the application form.
14. Prepare letter addressed to NIRA, Uganda requesting to have the said changes effected on your National ID.
15. Proceed to NIRA,fill in a form for national ID
16. Make payments for the new ID
17. Submit all the documents to NIRA ID office AT kololo,kampala Uganda.
18. Your application shall be reviewed .
19. If all is well, the anew ID with new changes shall be printed.
20. Cross check with NIRA on the date you were told to.

NB; Ugandans abroad may use the Uganda embassy in their respective resident country for convenience though some of embassies will refer you to Uganda.
