PROCEDURE FOR OBTAINING A LETTER OF SINGLE STATUS/CERTIFICATE OF SINGLE STATUS IN UGANDA
Governing law include
- STATUTORY DECLARATION ACT CAP 22,
- MARRIAGE ACT CAP 251,
- URSB means Uganda Registration services Bureau
- NIRA MEANS national IDENTIFICATION AND REGISTRATION AUTHORITY
A letter of single status/Certificate of single status is a document confirming or proving that the holder of the same is single or not married at that time of issuance.
- Prepare the application to registrar of marriages for issuance of single status letter/Certificate of single status in your favor/applicant
- Request for recommendation letter from local council one chairperson of your area of residence in Uganda stating his knowledge about your status.
- Photocopy long birth certificate of the applicant (the one issued by Registrar of birth formerly at URSB) and take it for assessment of certification fee either at NIRA or the bank advised.
- Pick assessed forms and proceed to pay certification fee the bank you are advised to pay at.
- Submit a photocopy of the applicant’s long birth certificate together with payment receipts to National Information Technology Authority Uganda for certification, you should be told when to pick it
- The applicant’s records at the NIRA will be retrieved for purposes of certifying the photocopy of the. Long birth certificate
- A photocopy of the applicant’s long birth certificate shall then be certified and forwarded to the dispatch section for collection.
- Go to NIRA on the day you were advised to check and pick the certified copy of the long birth certificate if it is ready

- One of the applicant’s parents /guardian in case both parents are not alive should also make a statutory declaration to the effect that the applicant is single.
- Take both statutory declarations to a commission of oaths and have them commissioned.
- Present both statutory declarations for assessment of registration fee at URSB or the BANK you are advised to pay in.
- Upon assessment pick payment slips and pay the registration fee at the bank as advised at either the bank or URSB.
- Submit both the statutory declarations and the payment receipts to registrar of documents at URSB for registration, you should be told when to check.
- The registrar of documents shall then register them and forward them at dispatch section for your collection.
- Go on the day you were advised to check and pick the registered documents if they are ready
- Photocopy one of your identity cards i.e. passport/national ID card, voters card to prove that your nationality.
- Attach all the above registered statutory declarations, certified long certificate of birth, LC1 recommendation on the application already prepared.
- Present the application for assessment of application fee at URSB or the BANK you are advised to pay in.
- Upon assessment pick payment slips and pay the application fee at the bank as advised at either the bank or URSB.
- Submit the application for single status letter/Certificate of single status with all the attachments to office of registrar of marriages at URSB for consideration and you should be told when to check.
- The registrar shall go through the application and all the attachments, if he or she is satisfied with the document submitted, letter of single status/Certificate of single status will be issued as requested.
- Go on the day you were advised to check and pick the single status letter/Certificate of single status.
