
HOW UGANDANS AGED 21 YEARS OLD AND ABOVE MAY CONTRACT CIVIL MARRIAGE IN UGANDA
Governing law include,
- STATUTORY DECLARATION ACT CAP 22,
- MARRIAGE ACT CAP 251,
- URSB means Uganda Registration services Bureau
- Make up your mind with your intended partner to contract a civil marriage (both of you should 21 years old and above) and where you want to celebrate it from.
- Request for recommendation letter from local council one chairperson of your area of residence in Uganda to prove that you have been a resident for at least 15 days in the district where you intend to solemnize your marriage.
- Get a lawyer to prepare independent affidavits in support of your intended marriage in conformity with Marriage Act cap251( in case you do not have one click on this link for assistance https://onlinelegaldocumentdraftingeastafrica.wordpress.com/2022/03/27/civil-marriage-affidavits/
- Take both affidavits to a commission of oaths and have them commissioned.
- Present both affidavits for assessment of registration fee at URSB or the BANK you are advised to pay in.
- Upon assessment pick payment slips and pay the registration fee at the bank as advised at either the bank or URSB.
- Submit both affidavits and the payment receipts to registrar of documents at URSB for registration, you should be told when to check.
- The registrar of documents shall then register them and forward them at dispatch section for your collection.
- Go there on the day you were advised to check and pick the registered documents if they are ready
- Photocopy one of your identity cards i.e. passport/national ID card, voters card to prove that your citizenship/nationality.
- Submit all the above documents to the office of Registrar of marriages you intend to preside over your marriage celebration for consideration.
- You will then fill a notice of marriage before the Registrar of marriages at URSB or the district you intend solemnize your marriage from if it is not Kampala, indicating all your material particulars like names marital status, occupation place of residence, age among others.
- Present the Notice of the intended marriage for fees assessment at URSB or the BANK you are advised to pay in.
- Upon assessment, pick payment slips and pay the notice fee at the bank or URSB as advised.
- Submit the Notice of intended marriage together with payment receipts to office of registrar of marriages at URSB or Chief Administrator officer’s office (CAO) at the district for consideration and you should be told when to check.
- The notice of intended marriage shall be published on Registrar of marriages’ notice board at URSB for 21calender days.
- If there is objection to the intended marriage a caveat shall be placed and the issue referred to court of the republic of Uganda for determination
- If there is no objection to the published notice of marriage then the intended marriage will be celebrated after21 calendar days but not later than 90 calendar days.
- Get to office of registrar of marriages where your marriage notice was published from and be allocated a date on which you will celebrate your marriage (it must be between Monday to Friday between 10amto 4pm Uganda time).
- All parties to intended marriage should appear with two witnesses before Registrar of marriages on the date and time allocated as communicated by the office of the registrar of marriages.
- Registrar of marriages o shall then perform the ceremony of marriage before the two witness and there after issues them with a marriage certificate,
- Thereafter the parties to the cerebrated marriages should consummate/have sex with each other for purposes of validating the celebrated marriage otherwise that marriage will be voidable at the instance of either party for lack of consummation/sex.
